ISQ 65 or higher is recommended for early loaded implants in a new study
Osstell is used to determine the level of implant stability in a new study by Dr Bornstein. Prior to loading an implant, the authors recommend that a stability level of ISQ 65 is reached, as a minimum.

A study by Dr Bornstein et. al. investigates the success rate for implants with different surfaces. Osstell is used in the study to determine the level of implant stability using Resonance Frequency Analysis (RFA). According to Dr Bornstein, Osstell is a valuable tool for determining the level of implant stability in early loaded implants. Repeated measurements allow the clinician to compare the ISQ values and monitor the development of the stability. For early loaded implants ISQ 65 or higher should be reached before the implant is loaded. If the implant has a lower ISQ value Dr Bornstein recommends further healing time to increase the stability. Furthermore ISQ is easily understood by patients and makes communication with them easier.

A quote from the study:
"These studies support the ISQ/RFA methods to be a useful tool for the clinician in daily practice, if the concept for early loading is applied. For early loading, a consecutive measurement of ISQ values seems important to compare the values at implant placement and at the day of anticipated loading. If the ISQ value on the day of loading is <65, an additional healing period is recommended, and the ISQ value is measured again 3 weeks later until the required level is reached. This approach is practical and well understood by patients"

The title of the study is: Early Loading of Nonsubmerged Titanium Implants with a Chemically Modified Sand-Blasted and Acid-Etched Surface: 6-Month Results of a Prospective Case Series Study in the Posterior Mandible Focusing on Peri-Implant Crestal Bone Changes and Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) Values. The study will be published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research during 2009. If you would like more information or to read the study in its whole you are welcome to contact Osstell at info@osstell.com.

New study gives further support to RFA as a superior method for determining implant stability
A study by Zix J et. al (Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants. 2008 May-Jun;23(3):525-30.) compares different techniques for measuring stability in dental implants. The stability on 213 implants in 65 patients were measured using different techniques and the authors conclude that RFA (Resonance Frequency Analysis) is the most precise. RFA is the technique used in all Osstell instruments.
